Three Georgia HOA attorneys from NowackHoward, LLC spoke last week at the annual Community Associations Institute’s (CAI) 2021 Virtual Law Seminar, presented by the College of Community Association Lawyers (CCAL). Julie McGhee Howard,George E. Nowack, Jr. and Rebecca Drube each offered their observations and insights from the past year as well as their outlook for the year to come. Julie McGhee Howard, Esq., CCAL fellow, NowackHoward, LLC, Atlanta, GA
Julie is Co-Founder and Managing Partner of NowackHoward, LLC, and has extensive experience advising community associations having counseled condominium and homeowner associations across Georgia since 1996. Julie has served CAI at every level, including Georgia Chapter President in 2003 and national President in 2014. Julie is a fellow in the prestigious College of Community Association Lawyers and served as the College’s 2018 President.
Topic: Case Law Update
When times are tough, a little laughter can put things in perspective. This session took a first look at 2020’s most significant court cases and developments shaping community association law. Julie and co-presenter covered relevant statutes and regulations setting precedent for future cases, as well as offered perspective on emerging trends in association jurisprudence.
George E. Nowack, Jr., Esq., CCAL fellow, NowackHoward, LLC, Atlanta, GA
George has dedicated his entire legal career to representing community associations. George is also an expert on Fair Housing Law. He has successfully defended more associations in Fair Housing Act claims than any other attorney in the country. An active member of the Community Associations Institute (CAI) since 1982, George was one of the earliest members of Georgia’s CAI Chapter and served as Georgia Chapter President in 1990 and national CAI President in 1994-95. George is also a fellow in the College of Community Association Lawyers and served as Dean of the College in 2007-08.
Topic: CIRMS Insurance Masters Program: Community Association Risk Management & Insurance Case Law Review
This presentation examined and reviewed legal issues that have developed through case law that effect all insurance providers in the community association marketplace. This session reviewed eight cases across the United States, including Georgia. Additional current insurance updates from ISO and the IIABA that effect community association risk management and insurance was also be presented.
Rebecca Drube, Esq., NowackHoward, LLC, Atlanta, GA
Rebecca is a partner at NowackHoward. Since graduating from law school, Rebecca has devoted her legal career to representation of condominium and homeowner association boards of directors. She counsels community associations, condominium and homeowners’ associations on their daily business operations and transactional matters.
Topic: Panel of Pundits
This open forum reviewed topics and trends in community association law. The panel was an opportunity for peers to enter a Q&A chat room, bringing questions to the panel that may not have been covered completely in other sessions. The Panel of Pundits is always a unique opportunity to hear what’s happening in community association with insightful perspective from several professionals.
The CAI Virtual Law Seminar was held from January 25-29, 2021 and is the premier event for community association law, insurance and risk management professionals serving the community association housing model. The annual event draws hundreds of professionals, nationwide, because of the valuable content covering the latest case law, regulations, and housing trends influencing today’s HOA and condominium association models.
